  • Certain principles are fundamental for leading culture in institutions regardless of setting - we will review those. Startups present a number of specific challenges, including rapid changes in people-scale, focus on survival, and dependence on founder idiosyncrasies, among others. We will discuss wisdom passed on by founders, and also by the funders of those founders (e.g., Ben Horowitz's book, "What You Do Is Who You Are"). The session concludes with a set of take-aways that should serve you no matter your setting, since project work and new initiatives even in larger companies can benefit from the same wisdom that founders have distilled.

  • Prepare to be uncomfortable during this 75-min experiential workshop, which is aimed at empowering Haas alumni to navigate difficult conversations in the workplace based on role playing real world examples of workplace conflict. This workshop will include self-reflection and discussions on why we find conflict so challenging and offers key tools and strategies to reframe it as an opportunity to build trust. This workshop is based on the Center for Social Sector Leadership elective Difficult Conversations: Conflict Lab, which is offered for MBA students at Berkeley Haas and was featured in the Wall Street Journal & NPR's Marketplace.

  • This workshop will help you define what "Advancing your Career" means to you. We all have the notion of "moving up" but we rarely understand what that means for us as individuals. Instead we rely solely on the implicit pursuit of "more ..." or "higher ..." or both. These traditional external standards that can leave one feeling lost or consistently dissatisfied over time. This workshop is designed to provide you tools to help you develop your own sense of what it means to 'advance your career' that can then allow you to show up in a more genuine and authentic way in 'advancing your career'. We will cover objective measures of your current role based on the learning agility framework as well as subjective measures based on the studies of thriving and flourishing. This workshop involves active participation and reflection. It's designed for alum at all stages of your career.

Why is this important? It comes down to this simple saying "Manage Yourself before Managing Others, Lead Yourself before Leading Others." This workshop is about 'Leading Yourself'. Having this vision for yourself is also important for determining fit for your next opportunities as well as standing out from other candidates during difficult business environments.

  • How can we have challenging (essential) conversations with people who may not agree with or grasp our perspectives? How do we create safer, structured environments where people from different social identities can explore power, privilege, positionality, and systems of belief? We live in a time of unprecedented change and uncertainty, a situation which has forced many to seek refuge in comfortable, familiar spaces devoid of meaningful differences and ideological challenges. In this workshop, Mohammed utilizes experiential activities and scholarship to catalyze intergroup dialogue and understanding across differences. Participants will learn dialogic methods for examining their own social identity and its relationship to power, alongside skills for designing braver and safer spaces. Élida M. Bautista, PhD, Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer, Berkeley Haas, will introduce this session and share reflections on how Haas has, and continues to, advance its' commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Sustainable supply chains are critical to planetary health and the long-term success of businesses. Many companies have therefore committed to improve their sustainability, but challenges remain. Addressing environmental and social issues has become increasingly complex as global supply chains stretch from sourcing decisions, oftentimes set in developing nations, to waste management practices at the end of the product lifecycle. In this session, Dr. Sytske Wijnsma will talk about the challenges to creating sustainable supply chains and introduce some opportunities on how to overcome them.

  • What can we learn about the accuracy of monetary policy communications and associated decisions made by the Chair of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors during the past years when macroeconomic uncertainty and inflation spiked? Are there any predictable errors at the level of the world’s highest economic authority such as the Fed’s Chair? What can alternative data tell us about the macroeconomy and the stock market, especially in uncertain times? How did managers respond to the risk of inflation when reporting corporate results to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission? This session provides insights from recent research and practice focusing on important interdisciplinary links between corporate financial reporting, stock valuation, capital markets, and the macroeconomy.
