  • Cognitive differences can catalyze social learning through the process of one-to-one social influence. Yet the learning benefits of exposure to the ideas of cognitively dissimilar others often fail to materialize. Why do cognitive differences produce learning from interpersonal influence in some contexts but not in others?

To answer this question, Professor Srivastava will share results from a novel experimental paradigm in which participants (a) respond to a polarizing scenario; (b) view an opposing argument by another whose cognition is either similar to or different from their own and is either observable to them or obscured; and (c) have an opportunity to respond again to the scenario. Findings from this study help shed light on the conditions under which exposure to cognitive differences can ameliorate opinion polarization in groups. We will discuss implications of these findings for social influence, collective intelligence, and diversity in groups and teams.

  • Will AI make us more productive? Robert Solow once said,“You can see the computer age everywhere but in the productivity statistics." We all know how the various industrial revolutions led to unprecedented increases in productivity and prosperity, but for the last couple of decades, that productivity growth seems to have slowed down. Why have the rapid transformations related to IT, computing, and software not led to outcomes similar to those associated with the factory system and electricity? Perhaps the latest developments in AI will do the trick?? Or will AI result in mass layoffs and unemployment? Let's discuss!

  • Machine learning models have become ubiquitous tools that are central to our everyday life. Their importance cannot be understated: they both inform our decision-making and hint at how those around us think. Yet, these seemingly objective “machines” are more human than they may seem. Their output is frequently impacted by consequential baked-in biases, leading them to produce output that fuels discrimination and inequality by disproportionately favoring some populations over others. In this talk, Dr. Osborne considers how organizations – and the people in them – can unintentionally input bias into these models. He then uses insights from psychology to discuss how they can prevent this from occurring.

Élida M. Bautista, PhD, Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer at Berkeley Haas, will introduce this session and share reflections on how Haas has, and continues to, advance its' commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
